Show
Red Carpet Comedy was created to benefit three different groups of people for very different reasons:
- Comedy Fans – People that enjoy watching stand-up comedy will get a kick out of watching professional comedians try their material. Some of it you’ll see again later in comedy clubs and on TV, some of it will never be said in public again.
- Professional Comedians – The pros needs a place to try their new stuff before taking it to the clubs (where the stakes are higher).
- Amateur Comedians – One of the best ways to learn about performing stand-up comedy is to watch the pros. While there won’t be any amateurs on stage, they will most definitely be in the audience learning.
If you are a fan of stand-up comedy (heck, even just a fan of laughing – and who isn’t?) then this show was created for you. Let’s face it: you can only watch your favourite comedians perform their best material so many times before it doesn’t have to same impact that it can. Fortunately: most comedians don’t stop working on new stuff – it’s just rare that they get the opportunity to showcase only their new stuff. Red Carpet Comedy is the show where they are not only allowed to do just that, but there are consequences when they talk about the stuff that they have talked about before!
The show will be a series of professional comedians performing all-new sets anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes in length. The show will have an MC (also doing all new material) and another 10 or so acts.
Some of the performers will do great work and present material that is already club-worthy. Others will present material that will need some more work.
What you are guaranteed is an evening of entertainment that is completely unique and will NEVER occur again. With tickets at only $10 – there is nothing to lose and a whole lot of laughs to gain!
The idea of a “pro only open mic” isn’t a new one but this show is the first of its kind to occur in Calgary, AB. It is strange that it has taken so long to catch on in Calgary, but now that it has the city’s professional comedians have a high quality stage on which to “work out”. The more experienced the comic, the more stage time they will be allowed to have with only a couple of conditions.
Firstly: you MUST perform all-new material. The purpose of the stage is to try out new stuff… not to practice old stuff. Secondly: the only rule governing the pros time on stage is “don’t hurt the show”. Professional comics should have the wherewithal to be able to tell how well they are doing (or not doing) and if their set isn’t going well, they should make a graceful exit.
Stage time isn’t the only perk to performing on the show. In addition to the stage time all comics that appear on the show will also receive some marketing benefits (via a bio and links on this website) and a high quality audio recording of your set from the show (delivered to you via email within a week of the performance). Hopefully these added benefits will not only help you improve on your new material, but provide a bit of a publicity boost as well.
If you are a professional comic that wants stage time you can RSVP for the next Red Carpet Comedy using this online form.
One of the main ways that amateur comedians learn about stand-up comedy is to watch the pros perform. Having a dozen comedians in one room (and on one show) is a great way to pack a lot of learning into one evening. This valuable experience isn’t given away for free. Red Carpet Comedy doesn’t have any complimentary tickets available (that means there are no freebies for the amateurs)… however: we do need to fill some volunteer positions the evenings of the shows and the people that work to help put the show on will not have to pay for a ticket.
We will need the following positions filled for each show:
- Door Person - Take tickets. Check reservations. Welcome guests.
- Sound Person - Run sound. Play music. Run lights.
- Photographer - The paparazzi. (Heck – it is a red carpet event!)
If you are amateur comedian interested in one of these positions please contact us via this online web form.
